In this blog, I will document my experience renouncing my Malaysian citizenship in Singapore, and mainly what to expect at the Malaysian High Commission. Do let me know if I missed out anything or if you have any questions :)
If you have dual citizenship like I did, you would have received a letter from Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) to renounce your Malaysian citizenship upon turning 21. I was born in 1999 in Singapore as a Malaysian, and got Singapore citizenship in 2000.
What should you do after receiving the letter?
Look for the items below, more information can be foundhere
If there are any items you do not have, just send an email toconsular@mhc.org.sg
I did not have Malaysian IC and passport, so I just sent them an email with my name, contact number, and ICA letter attached as a pdf.
Their email replies come quite quickly, mostly within 3 working days, sometimes even on the day itself. If you have missing documents, they will have to check with their National Registration Department Headquarters to verify that you were not issued. This took about 10 days for me.
You will then receive a confirmation email giving you your appointment date and time, which will most likely be in the morning between 8-9 am at High Commission of Malaysia at 301 Jervois Road.
My first email to them was on 22 February 2021, and my appointment was on 26 March 2021, including the 10 days for confirmation because of the documents I do not have, and also because I took 5 days to reply them lol!
On the day of the appointment, you can take bus 32 towards Bedok, from Redhill MRT, and walk 6 minutes through a residential area to Jervois Road.
I chose to drive, and parking is available at 3 Delta Avenue (HDB parking), about 7 to 8 minutes from the high commission. Toilets are available at the petrol stations on the way (just in case).
When I got there, it wasn't too crowded. There were 2 queues to enter, if you are unsure you can check with the security guard manning the entrance. You need to bring along a printed copy of the appointment email for entry. Your friends/ family won't be allowed to enter with you. Watch the signs on the wall and go to the Consular Section (not immigration).
I had to queue up to collect a copy of practice forms to fill up from the officer. After filling, I queued back in the same line to collect the yellow form. The officer will check your practice form and let you know if you filled anything wrong/ have anything missing. Note that one of the forms (I can't remember which) is in malay, so I had to use google translate.
The officer will then pass you the yellow form that you have to fill up inside the Consular Section room with the pens inside at the high tables. If you see several people inside already do take a queue number first, from the machine beside the counters, to reduce waiting time. Then fill up the the form and wait for your turn.
I did not photocopy the back of my Singapore citizenship certificate but the lady at the counter was kind enough to photocopy it for me. I spent less than 5 minutes at the counter. Once you are done at the counter, wait for your queue number to be called again to make payment ($10 in cash) and receive your pink collection slip.
I arrived at the gate at 8.12am, and was done by 9.16am. Remember to take your queue number first before filling in the yellow forms if there are several people already! I took queue number 27 and by the time I was done filling in the form, the machine was issuing queue number 38. 3 counters are available and each takes around 5 minutes you do the math :)
My pink collection slip told me to go back between 2.30pm and 4pm on 31 March 2021 (5 days later) to collect my acknowledgement slip. With the acknowledgement slip, you can go to ICA immediately after to take the oath of renunciation. At the time of writing this, I have not collected my acknowledgement slip.
After taking the oath, you would have to email ICA the date that the High Commission of Malaysia says that you would receive the letter of renunciation.
